It is known that one of the general characteristics of literature is that it touches man s emotions and feelings. It is the role of the writer to touch the reader s emotions and feelings throughout the selection of his theme which bears the underlying idea and main purpose of his work of literature. The writer usually portrays the theme so that the reader continues to be interested in the work and has to ask questions that can only be answered by understanding the theme of the work. One of the themes that has been recurrent throughout time is death and its inevitability. The death theme in literature is an old one. The death of the hero or any character in a work of literature can have a function or a symbolization which adds to the power of the theme. For instance, death may symbolize the death of some good thing in society, and there are times when references to death are so casual or mannered that they have no real power at all. Death is a theme that has been approached by many novelists, playwrights and poets time and again in countless ways with several interpretations. Among these are the ideas that: death is the absolute conflict that results in self-discovery or the natural cycle of life. Death has been viewed as a way of explaining life itself and the concept of living to the fullest.
